In 1984, an army recruit who appeared perfectly healthy
received the usual battery of vaccinations, including one against
smallpox. Within a year, he died of AIDS.
His doctor, Robert Redfield, in a telephone interview
yesterday, said that at the time of the vaccinations, no one knew
the teen-ager was carrying the deadly acquired immune deficiency
virus in his system.
In retrospect, said Redfield, whose research appears in
today's New England Journal of Medicine, the case of the young man
should be taken seriously as a warning on two key issues pertaining
to vaccination in general and an AIDS vaccine in particular.
