A memorial funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday,
March 14, in the home of Elizabeth Allen, Groton, for Dr. Fred H.
Allen Jr. of Groton, a retired blood research physician at the New
York Blood Center.
Dr. Allen, 75, died Thursday in the University of
Massachusetts Medical Center in Amherst after a brief illness.
Dr. Allen helped discover a prevention against Rh disease, a
potentially fatal illness in newborn children. He made his findings
in the 1950s while he was associate director of the Blood Grouping
Laboratory of Lying In and Children's hospitals. For this work, he
received the Joseph P. Kennedy International Award in 1966.
