Never a guy to wear a helmet, Phil Esposito was thinking of
chapeaus when he became the Rangers' general manager after last
season.
"When I took over," he said last week after making his 16th
deal in less than eight months, "I said, 'Hold on to your hats.' "
Ever since, of course, the Rangers have been run a lot like a
discount outlet for men's clothes. No price too low. No deal
refused. You want a 40 regular? You got it. Bobby Carpenter to Los
Angeles? Hey, you got him, less than 10 weeks after he arrived from
Washington. And in return comes Marcel Dionne, the No. 2 all-time
scorer in pro hockey, soon to be 36 years old and a light year or
two past his prime.
