A friend was doing the floating exercise, bobbing in the pool
with a bunch of fellow Marine recruits when he bumped his head and
went under, surfaced and went under again, to be pulled, gasping
and choking, to safety. Later, the drill instructors went at him --
one on each ear and one eyeball to eyeball -- balling him out for
his clumsiness. "And the worst part," one of them shouted, "is you
only went down twice. You should have gone down three times, and
the third time down you should have been singing the Marine Hymn."
