still stands with looming likenesses of the founders, Jim and Tammy.
Behind it, however, sprawls a world caught suddenly, terribly,
in everything the place had sought to avoid.
This is, you see, the forlorn entrance to Heritage U.S.A., the
$175- million, 2,300-acre Christian theme park/resort/broadcast
center TV evangelist Rev. Jim Bakker and his wife began building 10
years ago to protect Christian Americans from the ravages of drugs,
cussing and sex.
Here, as it happened, the Bakkers tried to build a Christian
