Governor Dukakis has taken his Greek heritage to Iowa and New Hampshire, and this week to New York, all in an effort to see if it can take him to Washington.

Not by itself, of course.

Dukakis, among other things, is a sitting governor, a Democrat and something of a moralist. He clearly had all these in mind when he announced his decision to run for the presidency on March 16, declaring his belief that "the American people will ultimately entrust the presidency to one of us on the basis of who we are."

But it would be a mistake to underestimate Dukakis' own reliance on his Greek roots as an asset in the campaign.
