NEW YORK - International Business Machines Corp. ended
months of speculation yesterday with the introduction of a new
generation of personal computers designed to thwart low-cost
imitators.
But some clone makers are breathing a sigh of relief as IBM
did not aggressively price its new machines as originally rumored.
Nor did the computer giant make it impossible to clone -- just
harder.
Indeed the bulk of IBM's new products and strategy is a return
to the "B" in its name: Business, large corporations. The IBM PC
line is designed to cement its leadership as the prime PC supplier
to corporate America, which buys IBM mainframe computers. With
