Mary Beth Whitehead, the high school dropout who has sworn to
recapture her child, has struck a chord of surprising resonance
throughout the world. The notion of a fit, healthy woman having her
baby torn from her arms because of a contractual agreement has
stirred intense debate over class and motherhood and the intrusive
roles of science and commerce in our moral code.
It is perhaps the juxtaposition of an ancient biblical dispute
-- the fight over a baby -- with the recently-developed scientific
technique of artificial insemination that has caused such confusion
over who we are and where we are headed.
