Eugene McCarthy, a white - aired gentleman in a somber gray
suit, brightens considerably when asked if he still seriously
yearns to be president.
"I might be moved to run again," he says, "but it would take
rash judgment. When you're rash, you don't stop to figure out the
implications. You just go ahead and do it."
The Minnesota-born former senator is reminded that he
celebrated his 71st birthday on March 29. "My father lived to be
98," he counters. "If the family longevity holds, I'll be all
right."
What would inspire McCarthy to run is, to quote him, "the
accumulation of intolerable issues including the confused economy,
unemployment and loss of freedom to bureaucracy." During ...
