Steak and Cheese. For years, it was impossible to figure out
whether the processed cheese was necessary to cover the leathery
taste of the skinny steak, or vice-versa. In nearly all the
restaurants we visited, including several franchise operations, a
steak sandwich was just a handful of shaved steak topped by oozing
cheese spread.
A number of the sandwiches, some of which we couldn't finish,
denigrated the designation of both steak and cheese. They tasted
more like greasy leftovers. Some restaurants keep their steak
frozen and simply toss an icy wedge on the griddle so the steak
tastes like it's been boiled. Some add onions to disguise the lack
of flavor.
