The world can forestall a dramatic and possibly catastrophic jump in Earth's temperature due to the greenhouse effect, if strong measures are taken now to increase energy efficiency, protect tropical forests and reduce emissions of certain man-made chemicals, according to a report released today by the World Resources Institute.

And, according to the Washington-based environmental research center, this can be done without resorting to nuclear power or slowing economic growth.
