Q. Why are private detectives called "pinkertons"?

A. The fact that "private eye" is synonymous with "pinkerton"
(now found in the dictionary) is due to an intrepid Scotsman, Alan
Pinkerton, who in 1850 founded possibly the first commercial
detective agency in this country. Prior to beginning his business,
he was first deputy sheriff of Kane County and later of Cook
County, Illinois. In 1861, when Abraham Lincoln was en route to
Washington for his inauguration as president, Pinkerton uncovered
an assassination plot as Lincoln was whistle-stopping through
Pennsylvania. ...
