VIENNA - President Kurt Waldheim said yesterday that he
did nothing wrong during World War II, and he denounced the US
decision to bar him on grounds of involvement in Nazi atrocities as
"incomprehensible."
"I have a clear conscience," he said in a speech on
television and radio. "You can trust me."
The United States Monday put the former United Nations
secretary general on a list of undesirable aliens who are barred
from entering the country. Officials cited new evidence linking
Waldheim to the deportation and execution of thousands of Jews and
others.
Justice Department officials said evidence uncovered by
investigators who examined previously closed Yugoslav archives went ...
