Dr. Roger B. Nichols loves to see flocks of little girls
wandering the halls of his museum on Friday nights. "We have
25,000 little girls a year coming in here to camp overnight" in the
museum's sleep-over program to encourage girls' interest in
science. "There are 600-700 of them roaming the museum for three
hours," he said. "They get a patch for their jackets, and they can
come back free all that year -- and they bring their friends. They
own the place.
"When kids are in the third grade," he said, "all of them are
interested in science. By the eighth grade, only 21 percent are
interested, and they are invariably all white males. Somewhere
along the way, we've lost the little girls ...
