BATON ROUGE, La. - The picture of the two experienced
politicians standing on the portico of the governor's mansion had
been designed to suggest much more than was really there.
"Both hands," said Gov. Edwin Edwards in a soft, syrupy tone,
as he offered his left and his right to his visitor.
Rev. Jesse Jackson smiled and shook both of Edwards' hands
vigorously even though, in a 40-minute meeting inside the mansion,
Edwards had declined for now to endorse Jackson's presidential
candidacy.
Not only had Jackson tried mightily to nail down the
controversial and flamboyant governor's support, but he also had
