Q. How can Baltimore claim the Constellation, which is
moored in the harbor there, is the oldest ship in the US Navy? How
about Boston's own USS Constitution? -- J.S., Beverly
A. If the truth be known, the Constellation, a 36-gun frigate,
was launched in Baltimore in September 1797 -- about a month before
the Constitution slid into Boston Harbor. But we quote from the
Historic Ship Register, published by the International Congress of
Maritime Museums: "The length, breadth, depth and shape of the
present Constellation show that she cannot be the 1797 frigate of
