Article: FIJI'S COUP LEADER REPORTED SWORN IN AS HEAD OF STATE

SUVA, Fiji - Fiji's coup leader was sworn in as head of state yesterday, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported. The move came despite a declaration by the judiciary that the takeover is illegal.

Also yesterday, 3,000 Fiji Indians rallied to protest a vow by the the insurrection chief, Lt. Col. Sitiveni Rabuka, to bar them from power, and foreign leaders increased pressure on the regime.

The BBC said yesterday that an Information Ministry official said Governor General Ratu Sir Penia Ganilau swore in Rabuka as head of state last night.

The BBC said the official was reached by phone from London. The report could not be confirmed.
