Article: Why Foreign Policy Is No Big Issue

Some very intelligent people are distressed that there has
been so little discussion of foreign policy in this campaign. In the
last presidential debate, Jim Lehrer bravely asked if anyone in the
audience had a foreign policy question. When he got one, it was
about the trade deficit with Japan, hardly the stuff that the lovers
of grand strategy hoped for.
Perhaps it is unseemly to say this, but: Why should there be a
preoccupation with foreign policy in this campaign? Yes, yes, the
United States has an especially important world role to play now.
