WASHINGTON - The Silkworm antiship missiles that Iran will
soon deploy are much more powerful than the Exocet missile that
smashed into the USS Stark last month, killing 37 American sailors.
However, the Silkworm is also easier to detect and repel if crews
take certain steps, according to military analysts.
US officials have said Iran has 20 Silkworms. None are yet
operational, but missile sites have been detected along the Iranian
coastline, and the missiles could be deployed within weeks.
The Reagan administration is debating whether to strike
pre-emptively against the missiles if they are deployed against
shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, The Washington Post reported
