SEOUL - Roh Tae Woo, who is considered likely to become
South Korea's next president, is a former general, like President
Chun Doo Hwan, but has tried to cultivate a more moderate image.
Roh's selection as president was almost assured when Chun
chose him last Tuesday night to be the governing Democratic Justice
Party's candidate in elections expected at the end of the year.
Chun has promised to step down when his 7-year term ends in
February.
Roh, 55, played a key role in helping install Chun in a 1980
coup when both were senior army commanders. He long has been
regarded as the president's heir apparent.
