The JVC Jazz Festival New York, since 1954 the patriarchal
event of its kind, will open its 10-day multi-site engagement
Friday evening at 5 with the first in a series of solo piano
recitals by Marian McPartland at Weill Recital Hall (formerly
Carnegie Recital Hall) and conclude Sunday, June 28 with concerts
in tribute to Hank Jones at Town Hall, a noon-midnight marathon
program at Saratoga and 3-11 p.m. show at Canandaigua, N.Y.
The more extensive scale of this year's festival was made
possible by the reopening of the renovated Carnegie Hall, which
remained dark last summer. As usual, the JVC fete will proliferate
