CLEVELAND - Like an old soap opera, the saga of Bill Buckner
continues. Will he play? Can he play? Should he be on the 15-day
disabled list?
Buckner rejoined the club last night and was on the bench for
Boston's 8-7 loss in the opener of a three-game series against the
Indians. But when he can play, or whether he can play, remained up
in the air because Buckner is still bothered by a bruised right hip.
Originally, manager John McNamara wanted to put his veteran
first baseman on the disabled list. He had gotten a report that
Buckner took only three swings in early batting practice and
stopped. Talks with his oft-injured first baseman also influenced
McNamara.
