RYE - When the moon was full earlier this month, the tides rose
and flooded dry spots along the marsh. Then the water receded, and
stagnant pools formed. This is where mosquitoes breed, said Sarah
Tillotson McGregor. Soon, she observed, large numbers of salt marsh
mosquitoes would hatch.
As mosquito control supervisor/entomologist for the towns of
Rye, North Hampton, New Castle and Newmarket, McGregor leads the
battle against mosquitoes. She said it's been a tough year.
"The mosquitoes are early," she said. "I've been spraying
nonstop since April, and I'm finding more mosquitoes than ever.
Unless it's a very dry month, we could have a pretty big population
of mosquitoes."
