LACONIA - The many wheels in the historic Belknap Mill here,
both large and small, which once spun cloth as well as sustenance
and life into the community, are now at rest. There are no more
socks, no more textiles being produced.
But in another sense the wheels are still generating life
for this town. The rim of each dormant wheel, supported by a series
of spokes, are perceived by some today to suggest the attentive and
open posture that caretakers of this facility must assume.
The energetic directions the Belknap Mill Society is taking
point toward a desire to become "the crossroads for the arts and
the humanities in the Lakes Region." Beautifully restored, the
