CARTHAGE, Tenn. - And now there are seven.
Sen. Albert Gore Jr. yesterday joined the crowded, wide open
race for the Democratic presidential nomination, offering himself
as "a national candidate from the South and proud of it."
Gore made his announcement from the steps of the Smith County
courthouse, in this hill town east of Nashville, the same site
from which he launched his political career 12 years ago, and from
which his father, also a senator, launched his political career 50
years ago.
Gore told a proud gathering of 2,500 townspeople that the
country is "a young and eager and restless nation" with "a special
role in writing the story of humankind."
