South American Journey," an eight-hour series that begins tonight
on WGBH-TV, Channel 2, at 9, is an attempt to achieve in behalf of
our neighbors to the South what Abba Eban managed for Jews in 1984
in "Heritage: Civilization and the Jews" and what Ali A. Mazrui did
for blacks in 1986 in "The Africans."
It's a great idea.
With its flamboyant history, disparate cultures, bizarre
politics, and a geography that ecompasses the Andes and the Amazon,
South America is an ideal topic for television.
For the most part, "South American Journey" is excellent, a
fascinating, educational, entertaining, surprising, and sometimes
mystifying study of a continent we ought to know better.
