Ballroom" opened on Broadway at 6 p.m., Dec. l7, l978. By
midnight Michael Bennett knew the show was in trouble. Before the
New York papers hit the street, word had secretly rocketed from the
newsrooms to the "Ballroom" party in the higher reaches of the
World Trade Center. With a couple of exceptions, the word was as
downbeat as the instant opinions spun through television.
The party danced on.
Michael Bennett, who had a habit of humming when deep in
thought, hummed for awhile on the sidelines. Then, collecting
Dorothy Loudon, "Ballroom's" star, whom he had accompanied to the
