Offense rarely has been a problem for Florida State in recent
years. From Sammie Smith to Warrick Dunn at running back, Danny
McManus to Charlie Ward at quarterback, and Lawrence Dawsey to
Tamarick Vanover at wide receiver, the Seminoles almost always have
had players who could create excitement, yards and points.
Defense, in some seasons, has been another matter. Last year,
for instance, the Seminoles ranked 34th in the nation in rushing
defense, 31st in total defense and had just one player named to the
all-Atlantic Coast Conference first-team defense. That's fine for
some programs, but not for one that annually aspires to win the
national championship.
