At a time when the most gripping news in years is coming out of the Iran- contra hearings in Washington, the overwhelming majority of reporters at The Washington Post are living a reporter's nightmare.

They are writing their stories without bylines.

"I didn't realize until this morning how much ego is tied up in that little byline," said Tom Shales, the Post's television critic, whose story on the hearings led the front page of the Post's Style section yesterday. "Everybody in this business is a little neurotic and you look at that byline every morning to see if you're still alive. . . . It's spooky."
