Article: 'LA BAMBA' A 14-YEAR STRUGGLE TO TELL THE RITCHIE VALENS STORY

For director Luis Valdez and his brother, producer Daniel Valdez, the making of "La Bamba," the story of the late rock 'n' roll star Ritchie Valens, was a family affair with overtones from "Citizen Kane."

Over breakfast earlier this week at the Four Seasons Hotel, the Valdez brothers explained their 14-year odyssey to bring the biography of Valens, the star who died with Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper in a plane crash on Feb. 3, 1959, to the screen. The brothers had to piece together a puzzling life that looked as if it had been through a jigsaw.
