For director Luis Valdez and his brother, producer Daniel
Valdez, the making of "La Bamba," the story of the late rock 'n'
roll star Ritchie Valens, was a family affair with overtones from
"Citizen Kane."
Over breakfast earlier this week at the Four Seasons Hotel,
the Valdez brothers explained their 14-year odyssey to bring the
biography of Valens, the star who died with Buddy Holly and the Big
Bopper in a plane crash on Feb. 3, 1959, to the screen. The
brothers had to piece together a puzzling life that looked as if it
had been through a jigsaw.
"I had always been interested in the life of Ritchie Valens,"
said Daniel Valdez, the inspiration behind the film which opens
