First came the news that there would be no America's
Marathon/ Chicago this fall. Then the rich, fast Continental Homes
race in Phoenix folded.
Meanwhile, closer to home, the buzzards were circling the
Oct. 4 Freedom Trail Race, an 8-mile circuit through Boston's
historic sites over which the world's best road runners have raced
in the past decade.
Race director Dennis Westphal had announced his plans to
resign, sponsorship problems were continuing, and the ever-active
rumor mill in Boston's running community was saying, "It's all
over."
Now, however, City Hall has stepped in. Representatives of
Mayor Flynn have asked Westphal to consider staying on and promised
