PANMUNJOM, Korea - Shootings are rare these days along the
151-mile-long swath laughably known as the Demilitarized Zone.
But all is not quiet on the Korean front: The war of
loudspeakers rages on.
Eighteen hours a day, 365 days a year, the gigantic speakers
positioned on the northern side of the 2 1/2-mile wide DMZ blare
the virtues of life in the land of Kim Il Sung, the "beloved great
leader" of Communist North Korea.
"Forward goes the progress of the people under the inspired
guidance of the great leader," the relentless, if disembodied,
voice was booming in Korean one day recently, soon switching to
another favorite theme: "Get out of here you Americans. Dogs, go
away!"
