The Goods: Cordless phones have come a long way since the
snap-crackle-pop days of the early '80s, but there's still a lot of
dissatisfaction in the air, according to an analysis in the November
issue of Consumer Reports. In a survey of the magazine's readers,
one in four cordless phone owners reported too much static on the
line, and almost four in 10 said sound quality varied depending on
where they were in the house. One in five said they had overheard
neighbors' conversations; three in 10 had deliberately used a corded
phone to preclude eavesdropping. And of phones purchased in the last
six years, readers reported that one in four had broken ("a high
