When Joey Crugnale purchased 114 - ear-old Bailey's ice
cream and candy store in January he alarmed a lot of people.
After all, they said, look at what Crugnale did to Steve's. In
a few short years Crugnale had transformed that small, Boston ice
cream shop into a 26- store chain that catered almost exclusively
to the yuppie movement that was just starting to sweep the nation.
A lot of people who frequented Bailey's didn't want to see
that happen to their ice cream store.
"You wouldn't believe it," said Crugnale, 34. "I probably got
50 calls from little old ladies who have been going to Bailey's
for 50 years who were really up in arms when I said I was going to
