Matters tend to get overstated in New York, the ultimate urban
jungle with its tabloid wars and its center-of-the-universe
mind-set. It would be difficult, however, to overstate what a
special night the New York Yankees gave themselves, their fans and
all of baseball at Yankee Stadium on Saturday, when they capped a
resilient season and a transfixing World Series with a 3-2 triumph
over the Atlanta Braves.
As baseball continues to try to work its way back from the
disastrous -- and still ongoing -- labor confrontation that wiped
out the 1994 World Series, its leaders couldn't have been more
delighted with what happened late on Saturday in the Bronx. Not only
