IN THE ROARING TWENTIES, a turbulent time that marks a critical
juncture in the American experience, the year 1927 represents the
apogee of that dizzy decade. It was a year of living dangerously, a
year of living well, a year of individual accomplishments great and
small, and of hoopla, fads and inspired silliness.
The great stock market crash that would change things forever
was only two years away, but who could know that? It seemed as if
the boom would never end.
Geoffrey Perrett, in his book "America in the Twenties,"
writes that, in effect, the '20s were the first decade of the 20th
century, with World War I serving as the "death agony" of the 19th.
