INDIANAPOLIS - Mayor Bill, as everyone calls him here, has
been taking Spanish lessons. Information booths loaded with maps,
brochures and discount coupons and manned by smiling faces have
been plunked down everywhere from the airport to the downtown
hotels. If a Bolivian wants to go to the children's museum (the
world's largest) or a Uruguayan needs some gourmet Chinese,
somebody will point him in the right direction. Or, more likely,
drive him there.
For the next fortnight, this once somnolent Midwestern
crossroads plays host to a hemisphere, and the residents badly want
to do it properly. Except for Havana, nobody else either a) wanted
or b) could afford the Xth Pan American ...
