WORCESTER - The University of Massachusetts Medical School is teaching 14-year-olds this summer. Seventeen high-school freshmen are operating on rats and doing microbiology experiments, pursuing pediatrics and exploring nutrition in the Ron McNair Health Science Professions Program, named for the late Challenger astronaut. The students take premed courses in the morning and work at the UMass Medical Center in the afternoons, earning $100 a week.
