Elvis Aaron Presley. Even on today's 10-year anniversary of
his death, he remains America's most manipulated pop figure. He has
become a divining rod for drastically opposed points of view. He
had "a wisdom that makes wise men foolish," if you believe U2's
singer, Bono. Or he was an "overrated hillbilly," if you believe
caustic biographer Albert Goldman.
The verbiage has reached a deafening crescendo in recent
weeks. Did Elvis have an illegitimate child? Who's trying to take
advantage of his estate now? Who wrote the latest half-baked
biography? Who is suddenly coming forward as his best friend? Does
Elvis soap outsell Elvis key chains?
