Article: STRONG ECONOMY CALLED HURDLE FOR DEMOCRATS

In his debate with Walter Mondale during the 1984 presidential campaign, President Reagan asked the American people, "Are you better off today than you were four years ago?"

It was a question Mondale did not want to hear. Most Americans were better off and it would have been foolish to tell them otherwise. So Mondale was forced to warn that prosperity was threatened by the budget deficit, a huge mountain of debt that might someday collapse.

Election season 1988 is still over a year away, but it is looking increasingly likely that the Democratic nominee will be in the same unenviable position as Mondale: trying to warn the American people that the good times cannot last.
