Bart Barnes's Nov. 16 obituary of Alger Hiss omits facts
central to the Alger Hiss-Whittaker Chambers controversy and
misrepresents the record of what The Post called a "Celebrated Spy
Case" in its headline.
Mr. Barnes fails to mention that Whittaker Chambers was the
only person ever to testify under oath that Alger Hiss was a
Communist spy. What prosecutor Thomas Murphy said in his opening
statement is as true today as it was 47 years ago: "If you don't
believe Whittaker Chambers, then we {the government} have no case."
Alger Hiss's lone accuser, Whittaker Chambers, admitted in
court, under oath, that he had testified falsely on 16 separate
occasions.
