Jim Gates is what his fellow physicists call an "existence
proof." The fact that he exists -- an African American man of modest
origins doing cutting-edge research in what may be the most complex
field of modern science -- proves that it can be done.
Sylvester James Gates Jr., is a professor of physics at the
University of Maryland at College Park where he teaches and does
research aimed at answering the question that Albert Einstein failed
to answer after devoting the last 40 years of his life to it. The
question is how to reconcile apparent contradictions between the two
greatest discoveries of 20th century physics -- Einstein's theory of
general relativity and quantum mechanics.
