JOHANNESBURG - Isaac Morefe, a community leader who was detained when security forces raided the West Rand township of Kagiso on June 11 last year, remembers a turning point inside Krugersdorp prison.

"After about six weeks, one day they brought in sponge mattresses, new sheets, pillows, towels, toothbrushes and toothpaste. That afternoon, the librarian came and brought us books," he said.

Morefe, who has since been released, remembers that instead of rejoicing, the improvements broke many of the men. "They then knew they were going to be held for a very long time. That night, I could hear the sobs from the surrounding cells."
