WASHINGTON - On the eve of Senate confirmation hearings of
President Reagan's Supreme Court nominee, Robert H. Bork, a broad
national coalition of groups opposing his confirmation are girding
for a battle for the "soul of the Constitution."
These opponents, which include liberal, women's, civil rights
and civil liberty groups, have organized national mail-ins,
candlelight vigils, telephone banks, mock funerals, hearings,
door-to-door canvasses and marches in a grass-roots lobbying
campaign against Bork.
Bork's supporters contend that he is a brilliant jurist who
faithfully interprets the Constitution. But opponents argue that
