DETROIT - If you wanted a microcosm of the season, here it
was. Al Nipper doesn't hold a 5-0 lead. Steve Crawford gets taken
upstairs by Kirk Gibson to blow it open in the sixth. The Red Sox
lose to the Tigers, 9-8, despite seven runs batted in by rookie
Todd Benzinger. Film at 11.
"Not very much you can say," shrugged manager John McNamara
after his people came apart like a Times Square watch before an
amazed 20,398 at Tiger Stadium last night. And there wasn't very
much new. Six-year-olds from Wellesley to Wellfleet can tell you
that whenever Roger Clemens or Bruce Hurst isn't on the hill, the
Red Sox are the playthings of fate.
