The Suffolk Downs situation became a political football
yesterday, and racing is threatened after tomorrow's card.
After Tuesday's government regulations committee hearing at
the State House made it apparent that it would take some time for
the legislature to help the beleaguered track, a crisis developed.
Rockingham Park called in its chips, letting it be known that
any horseman who was not on the New Hampshire grounds by tomorrow
would not be given stalls. Suffolk officials let Paula Gold,
secretary of consumer affairs, know that if a bill was not filed
yesterday, creating a positive atmosphere, racing at Suffolk was in
immediate trouble.
