There are places so special that, once visited, they haunt
the memory forever.
For me, three such destinations are: Sarajevo, Yugoslavia;
Chester, England; and Borobudur, Indonesia. Each is unique in its
own national context while being as unlike the others as it's
possible to be. All three are linked in my mind by an admittedly
subjective common trait: unforgettability.
Sarajevo, to my delight, confirmed just about every romantic
image I ever had of the Balkans.
The city sits in a high valley surrounded by jagged limestone
mountains that in winter are coated with snow and very inviting to
skiers (Sarajevo was host to the 1984 Winter Olympics). The rest of
