ELMONT, N.Y. - The Jockey Club Gold Cup. It is called
Racing's Crowning Event, and justifiably so. Of its 68 previous
winners, 27 were named Horse of the Year in their Gold Cup year.
Thirty-nine Gold Cup winners were declared division champions.
Horses such as Man O' War, War Admiral, Nashua, the mighty
five-time winner Kelso, and jockeys named Sande, Shoemaker, Cordero
and the amazing Eddie Arcaro (10 victories) have made the Gold Cup
thoroughbred racing's most famous 1 1/2 miles.
Unless a miracle occurs, Paul Mellon's Java Gold and jockey
Pat Day will join that illustrious company this afternoon when the
