BEIJING - Standing in the rain outside the US Embassy in
Beijing, a young biochemist, Zhang Guohong, says she knows her
country needs her, but she cannot help it -- she is desperate to go
to America.
"Now, I just want to go to the United States. That is my
goal," said the young teacher, waiting for the visa that will take
her away from her job in Beijing to study in New York. "Maybe in a
few years I will come back."
Chinese authorities certainly hope so. Since Beijing first
allowed a trickle of scholars to study abroad in 1978, about 40,000
government-sponsored students have been sent to foreign
universities and research centers around the world. So far, fewer
