Bob Stanley's career began unraveling long before the horror at
Shea Stadium one year ago tonight; his troubles developed, as if he
had been stricken by a Pharaoh's curse, when he signed a contract
three seasons ago that brought him unbelievable riches and an
unforeseeable world of grief.
After serving the Red Sox since 1977 as their most reliable
pitcher, Stanley, with his agent, Bob Woolf, negotiated a salary of
$1 million a year for five years. Then he failed to prove he was
worth it. Stanley was 6-6 in both 1985 and 1986, and the joy
